The Nine Doors: How Each Enneagram Point Meets a Creative Block
Every creative block feels personal, but the Enneagram suggests it isn’t random. The way you stall out on a project is shaped by the same core pattern that shapes everything else about how you move through the world. Here’s a quick tour of how each Point tends to meet the wall, and the door that tends to open it.
Point 1, The Reformer, stalls when the work isn’t “right” yet. The door out is permission: a rough draft is allowed to be rough.
Point 2, The Helper, loses the thread when creating starts to feel self-indulgent. The door out is remembering that the work itself is a form of giving.
Point 3, The Achiever, freezes when there’s no clear metric for success. The door out is making something with no audience in mind at all, just to remember why they started.
Point 4, The Individualist, spirals when the work stops feeling special enough. The door out is finishing something ordinary on purpose.
Point 5, The Investigator, gets stuck endlessly researching instead of making. The door out is a hard deadline, even a fake one.
Point 6, The Loyalist, second-guesses every choice into paralysis. The door out is picking a direction and treating doubt as information, not a stop sign.
Point 7, The Enthusiast, has no shortage of ideas but rarely finishes one. The door out is falling back in love with the middle of a project, not just its beginning.
Point 8, The Challenger, pushes so hard the work loses its life. The door out is softening the grip: letting the work lead for a while.
Point 9, The Peacemaker, drifts into everything except the work itself. The door out is naming one small next step and doing only that.
This is one of the threads Catherine and Russ Hudson pull on at length in The Creative Moment, not as nine fixed boxes, but as nine different doorways into the same room. Knowing which door is yours doesn’t make the block disappear. It just means you stop pushing on a door that was never going to open for you.
